Useful Definitions

It is common to hear many different terms when discussing the topic of invasive species, and sometimes this can get confusing. Below are some useful definitions to remember:

Native: Historically found in an area. Example: elodea

Non-native: Introduced from somewhere else. Example: Peppermint

Invasive: Non-native and causes measurable harm to the environment, economy, or human health. Example: Japanese knotweed

Nuisance: Interferes with human activity. Example: dandelion

It is important to remember that not all non-native species are invasive. Non-native species are only considered invasive if they are causing measurable harm to the environment, economy, or human health. Both native and non-native species can be considered a nuisance if they are interfering with human activity.
