Invasive Species Management Steward Position- Finger Lakes National Forest

Work Location: Finger Lakes National Forest, Hector, NY 14818

Time: 40 hrs/week, 8 weeks

Pay: $12/hr

Approximate Start Date: June 26, 2017

Deadline to Apply: June 17, 2017

Job Description:

Candidate will inventory and help in the management of target invasive species at the Finger Lakes National Forest as part of a US Forest Service Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) grant. This project aims to protect and enhance the integrity of the Great Lakes watershed through management of priority invasive species and restoration of native flora. The position will primarily consist of field work including invasive species surveys and removal.   Some office work will be required to manage survey data. Candidate will be an employee of the Finger Lakes Institute at Hobart and William Smith College.

Job duties include:

–        Surveying, mapping, and reporting invasive species populations, including any treatments conducted during the field season.

–        Manually controlling target invasive species using survey data.

–        Coordinating volunteer events to control invasive species.

 Minimum Qualifications:

–        Associates degree in related field (Conservation, Environmental Science, Wildlife, etc.) and/or relevant work experience.

–        Experience with plant identification.

–        Stewards must be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and capable of the physical requirements involved in hiking and manual removal of invasive species.

–        Candidates must be able to provide their own transportation to and from work site.

Preferred Qualifications:

–        Bachelors of Science or pursuing a degree in environmental studies/science, biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field.

–        Experience using GPS and GIS.

–        Excellent communication and organizational skills, be reliable and self-motivated.
