Finger Lakes Institute (FLI) is dedicated to the promotion of environmental research and education about the Finger Lakes and surrounding environments. In collaboration with regional environmental partners and state and local government offices, the Institute fosters environmentally-sound development practices throughout the region, and disseminates accumulated knowledge to the public.
About FL-PRISM
The Finger Lakes Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (FL-PRISM) is a network of partners in 17 counties of the Finger Lakes region of New York and brings together the resources of a diverse range of organizations to prevent, detect, control, and manage invasive species; ultimately reducing their proliferation and impacts. With the cost to control invasive species within the United States estimated between $120B and $137B annually (Pimentel et al. 2005, Runyon et al. 2012), the FL-PRISM allows for sharing and leveraging of limited resources within the partnership while representing a highly-visible program that builds community awareness and participation.
Position Summary
- Under the direction of the Water Chestnut Strike Team Lead and the Water Chestnut Project Manager, s/he will help survey, mechanically remove, and collect data for water chestnut in the Finger Lakes.
- Strike Team Intern will use watercraft, hip waders, and other tools to physically remove water chestnut from known locations in the Finger Lakes, survey for new infestations, and input locations into the iMapInvasives software.
- Strike Team Intern will be required to train with FL-PRISM and FLI on protocols, field safety, and sampling methodologies prior going in the field and will complete paid office days after the end of the program to process paperwork and equipment as necessary.
- Strive to help create a cohesive functioning team by practicing good employee practices.
- Ensure compliance with FLI and HWS rules and regulations and work to resolve any issues that arise.
- Engage in weekly team meetings and help meet daily/weekly priorities for data collection, professional skill-building and team-building exercises.
- Help keep tools and field equipment in proper working order, and maintain safe field operations.
Responsibility and Scope
- Strike Team Intern will use watercraft, hip waders, and other tools to physically remove water chestnut from known locations in the Finger Lakes and survey for new infestations and input locations into the iMapInvasives software.
- Help lead or monitor work groups consisting of volunteers covering a wide geographic area.
- Work under minimal and distant supervision; must make independent decisions based on experience and judgments.
- Resolves routine issues independently, consulting with Lead Strike Team person to develop plans for resolution of complex and unusual problems.
Working Conditions
- Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
- Requires long hours in both isolated settings, and public spaces.
Travel Requirements
Some weekends and evening hours will be required. Occasional overnight trips may be required. Work vehicles may be available for use however, use of personal vehicle will be necessary. Successful candidate will be reimbursed for work related travel when using personal vehicle, at a rate of $0.54 per mile. Successful candidate must have their own reliable transportation.
Minimum Qualifications
- 12 credit hours towards an Undergraduate Degree (Ecology, Biology, Natural Resources or similar preferred)
- Experience in performing physical outdoor work, preferably biological monitoring.
- Experience in recognizing plant and animal species.
- Experience in operating various types of equipment.
- Experience or desire to get wet, muddy, and work in wetland or aquatic ecosystems
- Experience in working in a team environment.
- Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g., First Aid, CPR, and driver’s license)
Preferred Qualifications
- Good team player with flexibility, strong communication and organizational skills
- Demonstrated leadership capability through college or extracurricular activities.
- Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather, in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Software (word, excel, power point, access)
- Working knowledge of social media (twitter, Facebook) and website maintenance
Position Benefits and Salary
This position is provisional contingent upon funding contract completion. The Strike Team Intern position is a temporary, benefits ineligible position at the Finger Lakes Institute at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The pay rate for this position is $12 per hour, 40 hours per week for 10 weeks (~June 13- August 19)*.
