Survey for invasive tree species near SUNY Morrisville with Rebecca Hargrave.

A recently “discovered” population of naturalizing yellow buckeye, Aesculus flava, led to a more formal evaluation of three sites near SUNY Morrisville’s campus. As a result, many non-native trees, not known to be in the area, were found naturalizing including Japanese tree lilac, Syringa reticulata, Amur corktree, Phellodendron amurense, and Kentucky coffeetree, Gymnocladus dioicus. Take part in New York’s Invasive Species Awareness Week when we will explore these sites, evaluate conditions on the ground, and discuss potential impacts and potential management strategies. Length 1.5-2 miles. There is a limit of 10 people for the trip so please CLICK HERE to register and we will send you more details on the trip and the meeting place. There will be a waiting list. If you have any questions about the trip before registering, contact events@nyflora.org

Invasive Species of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex

6pm-7:30. Log on for a virtual presentation to learn about some of the invasive species that can be found within the Montezuma Wetlands Complex. The management of invasive species is an ongoing effort at both Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Northern Montezuma Wildlife Management Area. Restoring the wetlands, forest, and grassland habitats are so important throughout the Complex to provide native food sources, shelter, and habitat for the migratory and breeding birds that use the Montezuma Wetlands Complex throughout the year. After registering, you will receive the Zoom link information emailed to you. Call 315.365.3588 or email montezuma@audubon.org with questions. Register here: https://act.audubon.org/a/invasive-species-montezuma-wetlands-complex

Logan Hill Nature Preserve Invasive Species Control Project

9:30am – 12:00 pm. Join us at the Logan Hill Nature Preserve to continue clearing brush from an area that will be restored as meadow habitat.  We have been working at removing large brush from the field, and are getting close to having most of it cut down.  Once cleared, it will allow for regular mowing of this field which will then help to provide more diverse habitat on the preserve.  FLLT staff will be running power tools to cut the brush, and your help is needed to haul and pile up the brush.  This work is moderately strenuous.  It may require a mile hike to get to the field where we will be working, but I hope to shuttle volunteers to the site.  The site is accessible if you have a high-clearance 4WD/AWD vehicle.  Tools and work gloves will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own.  We will be working until lunch, but I will provide water and light snacks.  We will meet at the municipal water tower driveway, and arrange transportation to the work site from there.  You should consider wearing long pants, and please wear sturdy shoes or work boots. Logan Hill Rd./Water St., Town of Candor, Tioga County. Directions can be found here:  https://www.fllt.org/preserves/logan-hill-nature-preserve/

  1. eugene binder says:

I have handout literature, and CD powerpoints, on Asian Longhoorned Beetle, Emerald Ash Borer, and Hemlock Wooly Adelgid. Any suggestions how these can help? I’ll be bringing them to Naples on Friday. I worked with USDA on ALB eradication, before retirement, and have specimens of the beetle, and logs showing its damage.
